On 14 August it was the Afrikaans Language’s birthday and it is commemorated as the birthday of Afrikaans because on this date of 14 August 1875, the Society of True Afrikaners (GRA) was founded in Paarl. Therefore, Afrikaans is 146 years old this year. The Cape Is Still Afrikaans, But For How Long? Most of us probably know parts of the country’s history. From 1652, when the first Dutch landed in the Cape, until 2020, when most people did not even realize that the country was bankrupt, due to its infinite number of problems. One of the biggest problems, the “Elephant in the Room“, is OVERPOPULATION. Southern Africa is internationally regarded by experts as a dry subcontinent, and the RSA is even drier than the rest. Any sensible person will be able to tell you that blacks cannot reproduce indefinitely, as they please, without causing a humanitarian disaster. Afrikaans as a language of instruction at Stellenbosch University will have to take a subordinate place – English will be the medium of instruction

In June 2016, Stellenbosch University decided that English would be the language of instruction and that Afrikaans should take a subordinate place.

The vote cast by 113 against 10 votes in favor of the resolution is a clear indication that Afrikaans is being rejected by the government and certain opposition parties.

On Thursday, the Constitutional Court ruled that the university’s decision to make English the main language, with Afrikaans in addition, is a “reasonable” decision that should remain so.

Language policy judgement explained
Judge Johan Froneman confirmed the bench’s unanimous decision on Thursday. He explained his reasons for upholding the contentious language policy at Stellenbosch University, reasoning that too many students on campus are unable to learn subject matter when taught in Afrikaans:

Panyaza Lesufi – Blame white people for overcrowding in schools, Afrikaans people in particular

Tuks phasing out Afrikaans as medium of instruction and will from now only use English as the primary language of communication and administration

The University of Pretoria is to phase out Afrikaans as the official medium of instruction at all its campuses and residences.

The university will from now only use English as the primary language of communication and administration.

University spokesperson Rikus Delport said the policy was adopted in 2016 by the university’s council and Senate after “extensive consultation process and recommendations from all interested parties”.

“The change in policy is aimed at facilitating social cohesion, and the university will continue to embrace and encourage multilingualism to foster unity and provide equal opportunities to speakers of all South African languages,” he said.

The consultation process included a language work stream that was formed as part of the transformation lekgotla and the independent transformation panel that focused on submissions from external stakeholders.
