The publication of the most recent Quarterly Labour Force Survey by Statistics SA and its calculations that the number of unemployed people continues to increase have once again elicited strong opinions and calls that somebody must do something.

Reading the labour force and unemployment statistics together with the report on population growth that Stats SA published a few days earlier – and the statement of the SA Reserve Bank on interest rates a week earlier – creates an even gloomier picture.

The labour force survey for the second quarter of 2019 shows that the economy added a paltry 25 000 jobs compared to a year ago, but that the labour force increased by 598 000 work seekers.

This means only a single job was available for every 24 people who entered the labour market during the last year.

South Africa Considers Handouts To Help Zimbabwe With Trouble Caused By… Handouts!

The spiraling economic meltdown in Zimbabwe has prompted South African authorities to think about extending short-term credit to Harare and helping it to write off a $7.4-billion external debt.

In an interview with the Daily Maverick newspaper, South African Finance Minister Tito Mboweni said the two governments were discussing ways to settle Zimbabwe’s debt to the IMF, the World Bank and the Paris Club.

The sides were also weighing up the possibility of extending an existing credit facility which Zimbabwe had with the South African Reserve Bank.

Zimbabwe had previously provided collateral for the loan in the form of its holding of SA Land Bank bills, the minister said, noting the country had always repaid its loans under that facility in the past.

Experts say Harare is clearly desperate for a bailout from South Africa and/or any of its other allies to resolve an economic crisis which is slipping out of control.

Brace yourself for an invasion of illegal Zimbabwean immigrants since researchers say they are likely to relocate to SA amid unrest in their country

Researcher at Social Services Africa says it’s likely that Zimbabweans will move to South Africa due to the unrest in their country.

The country has been rocked by deadly protests, with demonstrators taking to the streets after President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced a 150% fuel price hike.

Civilians clashed with police in the capital city of Harare. Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum says it’s recorded 844 human rights violations, including at least 12 deaths.

Research director of Social Services Africa Tara Polzer Ngwato explains: “We should start at the point and say that movement between neighbouring countries is normal. It’s not actually supposed to the inception of something that is a crisis. Of course, when we have a crisis in a country there are different movements. People are likely to change their decisions on moving back and forth between the two countries.”
