The residents of the Elias Motsoaledi squatter camp in Johannesburg apparently had enough and started protesting by making the only route to Lanseria International Airport impassable.

Burning tires, stones and bricks in the only route on Monday blocked the way to the airport, and vehicles that dared to face the barricades went under the residents’ stone throwing actions.

The squatter camp has apparently been without electricity for more than four months and this has made the residents decide enough is enough.

An Eskom spokeswoman said no power was allowed in places where illegal power cuts were made, which is the reason why the power was cut off.

The residents’ protest action later led to clashes with police, and out of anger one of the transformer cabinets was set on fire which delivered power to the squatter camp.

1 000ha of Limpopo farmland burnt in protest action – six farms near Vaalharts set alight by angry community members after cellphone tower collapse- savages choose cellphone communication over food security

It has been estimated that as much as 1 000ha of farmland near the town of Alma in Limpopo have been destroyed after allegedly being set alight during a community protest this week.

According to head of community safety at Afriforum, Ian Cameron, residents of the township outside Alma, near Vaalharts in Limpopo, were protesting about the collapse of a cell phone tower serving the area.

“The tower fell over and that meant there was no cell phone communication available,” he said.

It was further believed that demands that a local councillor be removed from his position also contributed to the protest action.

Cameron said the fires were allegedly started on smaller farms on the outskirts of the town on Tuesday.

“About six farms were burnt [down] and we estimate the affected area to be between 600ha and 1 000ha,” he said.

Cameron said the area was known as a game farming region, but the fires had affected irrigation farm

Lectures at all five campuses of the Durban University of Technology’s academic programs have been “temporarily” suspended due to ongoing student protests.

Opinion polls believe it is time for government to include higher education institutions that are unproductive and destructive.

Meanwhile, seven students have been arrested at the Mongosuthu University of Technology in Durban for damage to property.

The vandalism at Durban’s educational institutions has led to chaos over the past month, and many students have sustained injuries after they hit the police.
